Rise Of Sterling Silver Jewellery Industry
Silver jewelry has often been considered as a metal popular than gold. However, there are a number of reasons for this. Let's invade the history of the emergence of the metal and discover what makes it so glorified in the industry.
Long back in the 16th century, huge mines of the metal was uncovered by the Spanish in Peru, Bolivia and Mexico. Though the metal has been used in several lines over the past thousand years, it was during this time that silver saw its popularity spreading across Europe. Silver was regarded as an affordable metal and no sooner became the favorites of both the affluent and the commoners. Its low cost availability however encouraged it to be incorporated in preparing other objects and items of more functional value. Only a small amount of the metal was used to craft pieces of jewelry and ornaments.
With the advent of the 19 century, silver became much inexpensive and reachable to a much wider mass of people in the society. Low cost silver items started to be manufactured by inducing the technology of Electroplating. This however gave vent to silver jewellery of much degraded quality for both men and women.
It was due to the intervention of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, did the metal reach its zenith in both quality and value. The Queen started to adorn exquisite pieces of handmade silver jewelry and was stated to own a huge collection of ornaments in this line. Sterling silver rings, elegant sterling silver earrings, stunning silver bracelets, and lovely necklaces were all prized possessions of the Queen. Most of these beautiful necklaces were given to her by Albert. The Queen however discarded the machine manufactured pieces of sterling silver jewellery. During the period of 1850 to the end of the century, silver jewellery saw immense transformation and now began to be crafted in quality designs and texture much smoother than before. Silversmiths carved out elegant pieces of sterling silver jewellery in order to please the monarch which was also popular among the rich and wealthy. Silver was now much more inexpensive and a preferred metal over the expensive gold.
In fact, silver was the metal that became immensely popular in Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. Designers and craftsmen of this era however, were those that made the metal famous and highlighted the value of sterling silver jewellery. The jewelry that was carved during this period was much more exclusive and textured, clean and aesthetic. These pieces of silver jewellery were also priced modestly and were quite sought after by those who were fascinated by the designs and were regarded as better than the machine made jewelry.
The Danish firm of George Jensen, dedicated to silver jewellery design workshops, was what gave the silver jewellery its true value. Jenson put up stores around this time from 1910 to 1920 and featured his exclusive collections at all major cities like Copenhagen, Berlin, London, Paris, Stockholm, and also New York later on. These shops displayed all sterling silver items and became quite popular among those with an eye and passion for silver jewellery. The value of silver jewellery got a rise and was immediately regarded as a metal as precious as gold. Having acquired this status the line began to fascinate the industry and Jenson's collection became a hit instantly.
He stressed on producing a series of sterling silver collections in contrary to the elegant pieces of jewelry made out of the metal. Jenson now started producing collections of sterling silver rings and sterling silver jewels and began to sell to huge number of clients. More and more such people eagerly purchased what Jenson produced in sterling silver which started the cult of brand loyalty. Today more such luxury brands are reining the industry whose concept was adopted from the popularity of the Danish establishment.
More such metal deposits were discovered in Colorado, Nevada and Utah which decreased the prices of silver instantly. This followed a significant increase in silversmiths and jewelry designers in the US. Silver received extreme exposure when the metal became much more affordable during 1870 and 1920 in both US and Europe. In fact, this gave way to the emergence of silver cutlery in the industry. Many wealthy families began to use the silver items to dine which can be still seen as a tradition for special occasions.
However US did not eventually become the pioneer or silver jewellery even though it features some of the world's largest deposits of the metal. Taxco, in Mexico later began to be regarded as the centre of silver jewellery design and manufacturing during 1940. But it was due to American architect, William Spratling, did the silver industry in Taxco flourish a great deal and many Mexican designers started to incorporate their skills in the designs.
Now there are several such craftsmen all over the world with impeccable talent. But there are only few who can actually produce exclusive designs best in the contemporary lines.
