Summer Jewellery Tips
Summer has arrived and suddenly there are so many things to do and places to go. Whatever you're planning for the next few months – holidays, parties, day trips or entertaining at home – don't forget that jewellery has it seasons too!
All change
You've changed your clothes, make-up and hairstyle to suit the weather but what about your jewellery? Do the pieces that you loved wearing with your winter clothes have the same impact on your summer wardrobe? If not, treat yourself to some jewellery from the latest summer ranges to complete your new look.
Summer dresses and tops that reveal bare shoulders and arms are perfect to show off the bold, over-sized necklaces, cuffs and bracelets that are big news this year. Colour is also important. Delicate jewellery in muted colours will hardly be noticed when worn with vibrant summery prints, so choose striking designs in strong reds, greens, blues and sunshine yellow to match or contrast. Bright plastic bangles and colourful wooden beads will add a carefree vibe to fun days. And for the more sophisticated garden parties and formal social events don't forget that real gold looks wonderful against tanned skin!
Beware!
Don't be tempted to wear fine jewellery to the beach or when you're taking part in sporting or adventure activities. Precious metals and gemstones should be kept well away from sand, salt water and swimming pool chemicals; and wearing expensive pieces in situations where they could be accidentally damaged really isn't worth the risk. But you can still look stunning on the beach wearing ethnic-inspired jewellery featuring seashells, seeds and other natural materials. And swapping your gold designer watch for a cheaper model will still allow you to keep track of time.
If you are going away on holiday it's probably safest not to take your most valuable jewellery with you, but if you want to wear it at a family wedding or some other special occasion check your insurance policies to make sure expensive jewellery is adequately covered.
Take care
Before you put away pieces of jewellery that you probably won't be wearing over the summer make sure they're in perfect condition. If you notice a gemstone that's become loose in its setting, a clasp showing signs of wear, or any other damage, take them to a qualified jeweller for repair. They will then be as good as new when you do want to wear them again. This is also a good time to have watches serviced and cleaned.
One thing you won't want to do this summer is waste precious time fruitlessly searching for a special piece of jewellery to accessorise your favourite outfit. Instead of visiting every chain store in the High Street, call in to your nearest independent jewellery shop where friendly professionals will use their knowledge and experience to find exactly what you need.
