How Did Sterling Silver Jewellery Emerge?
Sterling silver pieces of jewellery are extremely exquisite. These are not only fascinating but also have great value among many. This is the reason why silver jewellery sells much more compared to other precious metals like gold. So what makes silver jewellery so popular among buyers? For this let's look back at the history of silver jewellery to unveil the answer.
The art of creating pieces of jewellery made from silver dates back to the 16th centaury when huge deposits of the fabulous metal was found in the mines of Bolivia, Peru and Mexico. These mines were uncovered by the Spanish and became quite a sensation in whole of Europe among people of all categories, peasants and nobles. Although at that time the metal was less used in manufacturing silver jewellery and was mostly used for other objects with greater price value.
Hence it took some time to engulf the market with a rapid rise in the manufacturing process in 19th century with the turn of the industrial revolution. These pieces of jewellery became much inexpensive and easily affordable by the common man. Machines were incorporated that used the technology of electroplating with more items made of silver produced that spread across the entire industry. However with low cost prices the quality of metal started to deteriorate. This made the texture of such jewellery for both men and women varied and were also produced in huge quantity.
With time, the common machine manufactured silver jewellery gave way to rather sterling and designer collections. This innovative handmade silver jewellery was introduced by Queen Victoria who emphasized on the quality of designs and uniqueness. The Queen treasured skilfully crafted sterling silver rings, stunning sterling silver earrings, and a whole lot of beautiful necklaces most of which was presented to her with Albert. During the period of 1850, the royalty was extremely fond of exquisite pieces of sterling silver jewellery. The craftsmen now started to carve elegant and sober pieces of handmade designer jewellery which was adored by the Monarch, noblemen and wealthy alike. Hence silver was much more affordable and preferred over gold and was regarded as precious and the later.
Later during the early 20th centaury, the silversmiths of that time were greatly involved in producing high quality elegant pieces of sterling silver jewellery. It was during this time that the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements considered silver as their favourable metal. The designs of this era were finely designed and also had a smooth and finished texture. The jewellery designed during this period was modern and modestly priced. The industry now craved for such fabulous work and chose to prefer these hand made designs over the machine manufactured pieces.
During the advent of such a phenomenal era of silver jewellery, George Jensen put up workshops to encourage more of this precious metal usage. Hence in 1910 to 1920, Jenson opened a range of sterling silver stores across Berlin, London, Paris, Copenhagen, and later in New York. These shops showcased an archive of beautifully designed exquisite pieces of sterling silver jewellery which suddenly raised the status and preciousness of the common metal. It began to be considered as a sought after metal and was even regarded as an alternative to gold.
The silver pieces that were available now were more elegant and clean with Jensen exhibiting sterling silver jewellery exclusively in series of silver collection rather than mere silver of individual jewellery. This ensured that Jenson kept manufacturing such collections which he kept selling to immense number of clients who became highly interested in this line of jewellery. The concept of brand loyalty emerged and now all major manufacturers seem to follow such trends to make their luxury jewellery brand much more popular in the fashion industry.
The art of silver jewellery manufacturing got a boost when huge mines of the metal were discovered in Nevada, Colorado and Utah. This emergence however dropped the prices of silver to a great extend. More silversmiths started to work on the lines in US and soon there was an overwhelming fascination of silver cutlery across the industry. This was seen mostly during 1970 and 1920 in US and Europe that reflected both elegance and affordability. The rich and affluent started using silver cutlery for their meals, although not so popular for everyday usage nowadays, the metal pieces are still put up on special occasions in many households.
Though silver jewellery and many such ornamental metal emergences did happen in the US, yet the nation was not considered as the root of this industry. During 1940 Taxco in Mexico began to be regarded as the pioneer of silver jewellery and is still the same today. William Spratling, an American architect started the collections exclusively in Taxco and played a major role in the rise of many such Mexican designers.
Now there are innumerable designers and silversmiths worldwide who are skilled in producing such works. However, very few can be regarded as geniuses in the art of sterling silver creation in contemporary collection.
